The Fall semester just began, which means it’s that time of year when I post my updated “student tomato-meter” showing the aggregated results of the ratings — on a scale from one-to-10 — that my students have given to every movie I’ve shown in my film studies classes dating back to the Spring 2009 semester. I’ve now taught 124 classes and shown a total of 504 unique movies. Below is a list of all the films I’ve screened to date, presented in chronological order by release date, along with the average ratings given by my students. My goal as a teacher is to show at least one movie by every great director who ever lived. Please scan the list below and feel free tell me in the comments section who you think I might be missing.

Wow that is quite a list of films you have shown to your class 🙂 Speaking of which, are you working on your favorite films of this decade since next year will be 2020? 🙂 Are you also excited about Martin Scorsese’s Netflix film The Irishman coming out later this year? 🙂 Anyway, keep up the great work as always 🙂
P.S. in case you are interested, me and blogger Cindy Bruchman collaborated on a blog entry regarding our top 3 favorite Robert Altman Films 🙂 Here is the link to the blog entry below and feel free to leave a comment 🙂

Good to hear from you, John. I will indeed be dropping my 100 favorite films of the 2010s list in December. 😉

I may have missed these in the list but I saw nothing by Wim Wenders, Hal Hartley, Peter Watkins, Chris Marker, Atom Egoyan, Manoel de Oliviera, Mathieu Kassovitz. Ecstatic to see you’ve included Ravenous (Bird), one of the few films I still view on repeat. I also wonder what you think of Ginger Snaps by John Fawcett. I found it one of the better teen-age horror shows.

Thanks, Theresa! I have shown Marker’s LE JOLI MAI and SANS SOLEIL and de Oliveira’s ANIKI BOBO. Your other suggestions are all good ones.

This post immediately me think of De Palma’s DOMINO, a film that is littered with bright red tomatoes from beginning to end. I found the visual motif to be a strikingly sly dig on the utter futility of aggregate sites like RT, especially knowing the end result is gonna be a “rotten” rating for Brian; while deeply flawed, the picture has more visual imagination than anything I’ve seen this year, save for LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.

Thanks for your response. I’m not really strong DePalma man but I’ll give DOMINO a look. I loved LONG DAY’S JOURNEY.

Lists are always entertaining. This one would have been more entertaining and interesting if you had also sorted by rating. While I am able to so sort with Excel, I feel you could easily do it yourself.

Also, you show one Fellini, one Tarkovsky, and, no doubt one of my favorite directors, Altman with five. Something is out of balance with the selection of screenings.

Showing more films by one director than another doesn’t mean I think that director is greater or more important. I just happened to teach one class that focused specifically on Altman (where the Tarkovsky and Fellini films were enfolded into more general History of Cinema and Global Cinema syllabi).

I would adore watching Lost City of Z in class! One of my favorite Tom Holland movies along side Spider-Man

LOST CITY OF Z went over very well with the students in my Global Cinema class. I haven’t seen Tom Holland as Spider-Man but he is indeed great in the Gray film!
