I’m currently between Summer and Fall semesters, which means it’s now that time of year when I post my updated “student tomato-meter” showing the aggregated results of the ratings — on a scale from one-to-10 — that my students have given to every movie I’ve shown in my film studies classes dating back to the Spring 2009 semester. I’ve now taught 72 classes and shown a total of 309 unique movies. Below is a list of all the films I’ve screened to date, presented in chronological order by release date, along with the average ratings given by my students. Below that I’ve also included a list of the top 10 highest-rated films. My goal as a teacher is to now show at least one movie by every great director who ever lived. Please scan the list below and feel free tell me in the comments section who you think I might be missing.

Thanks!

Wow, what a great list. I bet the students would love City of God, and something by Ramin Bahrani? Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo, Man Push Cart. By chance, do you know what their least favorites were? I love all of these films. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the recommendations, Martin. The only films to have been rated lower than a 5 are EARTH and THE FALL OF THE ROMANOV DYNASTY. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both are from the Soviet montage era.

was surprised to see a film of mine in this list, so it’s 5.1 rating seemed about right, but 5.4 for Beau Travail and 9.8 for Boyhood, i think not. but thanks for including me, it you want to show them my film Nightfall, i’ll drop the rental fee. i think it could do them some good. james benning

Thanks for replying, James. I agree that the average rating for BEAU TRAVAIL looks disheartening on the surface but keep in mind: when a film is rated 5 or 6, that doesn’t necessarily mean most students gave it a 5 or a 6. It often means that it got many ratings of both 1 and 10. Divisive films like ONE WAY BOOGIE WOOGIE and BEAU TRAVAIL often lead to the best class discussions.
Thanks also for offering to drop the fee on NIGHTFALL. I organize a pop-up film fest in the suburbs of Chicago every fall. I would love to fly you out next year to present it and do a Q&A afterwards if you’re interested.
Cheers,
Mike

It’s always great to see this list Michael! Very useful to me as I make decisions for my own courses. Glad to see the love for Linklater!

Good to hear from you, Dan. Seems like Linklater has been finding each new generation of college students since 1991!

Borzage is definitely missing, but I would also make a case for Mervyn LeRoy on the strength of his early thirties films! The rest of his career is pretty ho-hum, but I Am a Fugitive…, Gold Diggers of 1933, and even Two Seconds (really, I could mostly do without Little Caesar) are terrifically messy masterpieces. Oh, and Nicolas Roeg!

Thanks, Eric. I just compiled a list of what I thought were the most egregious omissions and posted it on facebook. Borzage was indeed on there; I will try to show something by him soon (probably either SEVENTH HEAVEN or LUCKY STAR).
Thanks also for suggesting LeRoy. He really did make some underrated gems in the pre-code era, didn’t he? I have a feeling I AM A FUGITIVE would go over like gangbusters.
My full list of regrettable omissions: Chantal Akerman, Marco Bellocchio, Frank Borzage, Stan Brakhage, Pedro Costa, Abel Ferrara, Louis Feuillade, D.W. Griffith, Hong Sang-soo, King Hu, Lee Chang-dong, Ritwik Ghatak, Jerry Lewis, Nagisa Oshima, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Christian Petzold, Jacques Rivette, Glauber Rocha, Jean-Marie Straub/Danielle Huillet, Bela Tarr, Frank Tashlin, Tsai Ming-Liang, Luchino Visconti, Erich von Stroheim and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Very cool. No real surprises here – comedy and action seem to score highly. I’d say your students have pretty refined tastes.
I would add these: Fred Zinnemann, Barbara Kopple, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Youssef Chahine.
You did have a Visconti, but perhaps not the right one. I like Obsessione, but it has a few problems. I’d go with Rocco and His Brothers or The Damned.

Thanks for the suggestions. Would love to a Chahine (probably CAIRO STATION) and another Visconti (my favorites are SENSO and THE LEOPARD).

All top movies, but you missed the best movie ever made:
Les Enfants du Paradis (aka: Children of Paradise) – Marcel Carné 1945

Thank you, sir. I love that film and do need to show it. Need to have an extra long class period though!

I think there are a few Japanese directors missing such as Kon Ichikawa (Tokyo Olympiad, Fires on the Plain, or An Actor’s Revenge), Masaki Kobayashi (Hara-Kiri or The Human Condition), Nagisa Oshima (Realm of the Senses or Empire of Passion), Hiroshi Teshigahara’s Woman in the Dunes, Masahiro Shinoda (Pale Flower, Double Suicide, or Assassination), ) Seijun Suzuki’s Story of A Prostitute, Takeshi Kitano’s Hanabi, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Marobosi or Still Walking. I prefer Audition or 13 Assassins for Miike and I find Obayashi’s House over-rated…

Thanks for the suggestions. That’s a formidable list of Japanese directors – all of whom I admire (with the exception of Kore-eda). Interestingly, I’ll be showing films by two of them this semester: Kitano (SONATINE) and Oshima (MERRY X-MAS, MR. LAWRENCE). I have shown Miike’s AUDITION, which is on the list.

Oh I didn’t notice AUDITION. I teach a Japanese Cinema class and usually use MERRY X-MAS, MR. LAWRENCE for Oshima as well, it’s accessible and a great film. I’m surprised you don’t care for Kore-eda. Just curious what’s your criticism with his films?

I’ve only seen MABOROSI and NOBODY KNOWS – and it’s been about a decade since I saw either. But I remember feeling like they were both aesthetically conservative and kind of throwbacks to an earlier era. What else by him would you recommend I check out?

I think MARBOSI deserves a re-watch, I thought it had a very powerful story and the location of the Noto peninsula is amazing, and STILL WALKING, both remind of the virtues of Ozu in Kore-eda’s film making. Also, LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON.
