I know we are supposed to revere _The Lady Eve_, but I always feel that it is a movie that ends before it is actually over. And I am fascinated to see _The Docks Of New York_. Was that for a class or general self-edification?

I love everything about THE LADY EVE. I know what you mean about it “ending before it’s over” but the abruptness is hilarious and kind of the whole point. When Pike runs into Jean for the second time, he’s ecstatic because he’d rather be with a con artist than a promiscuous woman . . . even though he doesn’t realize they’re “the same dame!”

I showed DOCKS OF NEW YORK in class. I’m trying to show at least one movie by every great director who ever lived and I realize I hadn’t yet shown anything by Von Sternberg. Went over like gangbusters.
