just seven out of that batch. can’t wait for winter sleep to eventually make its way to austin. there’s likely no way i am going to win a book or dinner out of this deal, but it is some consolation that i often take great suggestions away with me every time i read your blog. thanks!

Cole, that puts you at 17 total. Not too shabby! But, of course, the real point of this list is to spur discussion and exchange recommendations. Thanks for weighing in.

Seen 17 of these. Glad to see Exhibition on here, which I haven’t gotten to yet but is on Netflix with the other Hoggs and I really need to get to them soon.

That puts you at 31 total, Jake. I have a feeling it’s going to be a close race between you, Daniel Nava and Daniel Kieckhefer.
I went into EXHIBITION with low expectations for some reason and was fairly blown away by it. It’s an incredible statement about how homes become almost physical extensions of the people who inhabit them. I really need to see Hogg’s other work.

15 again out of this batch. I really ought to check out Leviathan before it leaves the Music Box.

That puts you at 30, one behind Jake. You won’t regret seeing LEVIATHAN at the Music Box. It was shot on 35mm and Zvyagintsev really knows how to compose for the big screen.

I am now up to a total of 12!

Five!

I’ve only seen 13 of these. EXHIBITION was painfully boring to watch, but afterwards seemed strangely fascinating – as if the humans were seen from the point of view of the uncomprehending house. And the house is a fairly tremendous setpiece. VIOLA and STRANGE LITTLE CAT were in the same category of viewing experience.

While it’s not obviously not a story-driven film, I strongly disagree about EXHIBITION being “painfully boring.” In fact, I found it riveting from beginning to end — though I realized long ago that I have a high tolerance for films that others find boring. I do, however, know exactly what you mean about the human characters being seen from the POV of the “uncomprehending house.” My first impression upon watching it was that it felt as if the film were being directed by a ghost within the house.
P.S. – You and Jake are now tied for first place at 31 films a piece. Daniel N. is right behind you guys at 30.
