Tony Leung Talks Training to Play Ip Man in WKW’s The Grandmaster

I shot this video at a Q&A in Chicago last night following a sneak preview screening of Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmaster. It was quite dark in the theater but the audio is clear. Tony is quite the charmer:

The Grandmaster opens in the U.S. on August 23rd.

If the video is a little bit darker and you can’t see the faces, you may have thought this is Jackie Chen speaking!

This is probably not the best WKW film, but definitely a film he tried the hardest. I really hope a more popular kungfu film like this would introduce Wong’s works to wider Western audiences.

Tony had a shaved head that night and joked that he had done it because he didn’t want to be cast in another movie where he would be forced to put gel in his hair.

As I said earlier, I thought the film was pretty great. It may not be as perfect as Chungking Express or In the Mood for Love but I think it’s in many ways Wong’s most mature film yet. My review will be up on Monday.
