    1. Have you seen P&P’s THE TALES OF HOFFMAN?
    2. How would you rank LIFE OF OHARU in MIzoguchi’s filmography?

I unfortunately haven’t seen TALES OF HOFFMAN, which is crazy because I love P&P. I take it you recommend it? I just showed THE RED SHOES in a class for the first time.

LIFE OF OHARU is definitely in my top 3 Mizoguchi. It might even be number one. I had only seen it once before — in the VHS era. The new Criterion Blu-ray is a major revelation.

I have mixed feelings towards TOH. It is definitely one of the most gorgeous films I’ve ever seen(imagine the extended version of the climax ballet scene in TRS!). However, it lacks the narrative power which is one of the main reasons I love P&P films, maybe because it’s a “composed” opera film.

I have never seen LOO, I’m expecting a devastating experience!

Conjuring over Rear Window? Never thought I’d see the day.

Oh, good God, there’s no “over” or “under” on these lists! The number one title is simply the one I saw the most RECENTLY, the number two is the one I saw second most recently, and so on. While The Conjuring is certainly no Rear Window, I do think it’s a good movie well-worth catching on the big screen.
