Was it the silent Floating Weeds or the sound remake? Saw them both recently and loved both, esp. the remake (you go, Haruko Sugimura!)

It was the 1959 version though, like you, I love ’em both. The UK label Masters of Cinema just released the sound version as a superb Blu-ray with image quality that is superior to the Criterion DVD (including far more accurate colors). Chicago’s Ignatiy Vishnevetsky wrote the liner notes too.

So, I jealously assume you have a region-free or region 2 player! Most of Naruse as well as my beloved Celine et Julie are only available in that format. Any recommendations in that regard or should we just lobby Criterion and/or Kino and/or Olive to release the Naruse and Rivette?

Life without a multi-region Blu-ray player would be intolerable! New Yorker Films owns the rights to Celine and Julie and they’ll be putting out a DVD/Blu-ray in the near future. I don’t know what the hold-up with Naruse is. Criterion should put out a box set of his stuff. Floating Clouds is one of my favorite films.
