3 Hitchcock films. Coolness. That Herzog film…is that a new movie? What did you think of Looper?

I got the Hitchcock “Masterpiece Collection” blu-ray box set and have been slowly working my way through it. Great stuff.

Grizzly Man is a Herzog documentary from 2005. It’s my favorite film by him.

On the whole I enjoyed Looper. Did you see it? I thought Joseph Gordon Leavitt did such a credible and highly amusing impression of Moonlighting-era Bruce Willis that I don’t think he needed the beak-like prosthetic nose. He must’ve watched Die Hard a hundred times to get the tone of voice and speech rhythms just right. I much preferred the film’s first half, which had a lot of great absurdist humor, culminating in the great diner scene. The move towards gravitas in the 2nd half didn’t really work for me (mainly because I thought the telekinesis/Rainmaker subplot was uninteresting).

Hmm Grizzly Man sounds interesting. I did see and review Looper and I enjoyed it as well. I do, though, have to agree with your take on it. The humor and pace of the first half works much better than the rest of the film. Gordon Levitt is brilliant channeling Willis here. It was so surreal. The Rainmaker story didn’t really bore me too bad but I get your point.

Hitchcock Blu set, that’s dope! I’m still hesitated because there are no new extras and not all the films in the set interest me so much as Vertigo and Rear Window.

Your thoughts on Marnie?Where would you put in among Hitch’s filmography?

The Bride with White Hair, haha,do you like it?

The Hitch Blu set is incredible. You should buy it when the price goes down. The good news for you is that the best looking films in the set are Rear Window, Vertigo, The Trouble with Harry, Psycho and North By Northwest. I like Marnie a lot but it’s not quite a masterpiece. It’s good “second tier” Hitchcock – along with The Birds and Dial M for Murder.

I love The Bride with White Hair. I actually showed that in a class although I don’t think the students understood it.
