I’m interested to know how you rank The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in German Expressionism and North By Northwest in all Hitchcock films.

BTW,McCabe and Mrs. Miller is a quite interesting anti-Western,the music in it is awesome.

I think The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a great film (and obviously a massively influential one) but I wouldn’t rate it as highly as the masterpieces of Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau.

I think North By Northwest is one of Hitchcock’s five best films (alongside of Notorious, Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho).

I agree about the beautiful Leonard Cohen songs in McCabe. If you haven’t heard his great new album, Old Ideas, you can check out the official video for one of its best songs here:

Good list. What did you think of Constantine?

I know what you mean. I love comic book adaptations, but I’ve seen just as many bad ones as good ones thanks to unfaithfulness to the source material. Have you seen American Splendor? That’s my favorite out of all comic book movies.

I’ve been meaning to see AMERICAN SPLENDOR for years. Thanks for reminding me. My favorite comic book adaptations are probably the HELLBOY movies (especially the second one, which I think is darker, weirder and funnier than the first).

Yeah, that one in particular is one of my favorites, though I do just wish del Toro would get around to the 3rd and final film, already. What other comic adaptations have you enjoyed? Have you seen Persepolis?

Unfortunately, I think poor box office receipts have put HELLBOY 3 on hold indefinitely.

I liked PERSEPOLIS a lot. I haven’t read the graphic novel but my wife likes it. I loved the use of black and white and the simplicity of the drawings in the film. I know it’s technically a French production but it could also be seen as a good example of the post-revolutionary Iranian New Wave, of which I am a big fan.

My other favorite comic adaptation is A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.

If you liked those films, there are some other comic adaptations that are good alternatives to more mainstream releases.

If you haven’t already seen these:

    1. Watchmen (Snyder) (director’s cut)
    2. V for Vendetta (McTeigue)
    3. Ghost World (Zwigoff)
    4. Sin City (Miller and Rodriguez)
    5. Road to Perdition (Mendes)
    6. The Rocketeer (Johnston)
    7. Kick-Ass (Vaughn)
    8. The Crow (Proyas)
    9. Akira (Otomo)
    10. Ghost in the Shell (Oshii)
    11. Metropolis (Rintaro)
