Touch of Evil is the very essence of film noir but it’s as if Welles is self-consciously pushing all of the conventions to a kind of operatic extreme. Quinlan IS a tragic figure of epic proportions but he’s also the most compelling character in the movie. The scenes between him and Tana are the best. McCambridge is also terrifying. Her line “I want to watch” is scarier than anything she says as the voice of Satan in The Exorcist!

I missed The Birds on TCM but I’ll be picking it up as part of a new Hitchcock box set that’s being released on Blu-ray soon.
